    The Archetypes

    Each mushroom carries a character.

We describe our mushrooms by who they are, not by what they promise. An archetype is a way of remembering: a small, true portrait of a fungus that has been studied, foraged and respected for centuries.

    The Thinker

    Lion's Mane

    Hericium erinaceus

Grown at our urban farm, Oswestry

Clarity. Attention. The quiet work of the mind.

Cascading white tendrils, almost coral. The Thinker is the archetype of focus held without strain: the long sentence, the patient idea, the second draft. A long-standing favourite of people who work with ideas for a living.

    The Sage

    Reishi

    Ganoderma lingzhi

Grown at our urban farm, Oswestry

    Composure. Adaptation. The long view.

Lacquered, crimson, slow. Called the mushroom of immortality for two thousand years before the word adaptogen existed. The Sage is the archetype of equanimity: meeting stress without becoming it. Bitter, deep, taken in evenings.

    The Guardian

    Chaga

    Inonotus obliquus

Hand-foraged from wild silver birch, Scottish Highlands

    Resilience. Defence. Quiet endurance.

A black, charred crust on the trunk of a birch, growing for decades before it is ready. Chaga refuses cultivation entirely; it must be walked for. The Guardian is the archetype of stamina: the immune system as patient sentinel. Earthy, faintly vanilla, taken slowly.

    On the café bar

    Five more, as powders.

At Oswestry these archetypes live behind the bar: single-mushroom powders that can be added to any drink, or stacked one or two at a time as our Mushroom Tea. They join the bottled three when, and only when, we can hold them to the same standard.

    On the café bar

    The Empress

    Tremella

    Tremella fuciformis

    Hydration. Luminosity. Inward grace.

Translucent, pale, almost a flower. Tremella holds water in extraordinary quantities and has been taken across East Asia for centuries for the skin and the constitution. The Empress is the archetype of inner luminosity: composure that shows on the surface because it began beneath it.

    On the café bar

    The Hero

    Maitake

    Grifola frondosa

    Vitality. Metabolic courage.

Known in Japanese as the dancing mushroom, for the joy, it is said, of the foragers who found one. Maitake clusters at the base of oaks in great overlapping fans. The Hero is the archetype of metabolic vigour: a body that meets the day on its own terms.

    The Catalyst

    Cordyceps

    Cordyceps militaris

    Energy. Oxygen. The lit fuse.

Slender, orange, improbable. Long used by athletes and by the high mountain herbalists of Tibet for its association with stamina and oxygen efficiency. The Catalyst is the archetype of activation: the spark before the long climb. Studied with interest; held to our standards before it joins the range.

    On the café bar

    The Provider

    Shiitake

    Lentinula edodes

    Nourishment. Steadiness. The honest meal.

Forest-grown, umami-rich, the most familiar of the functional mushrooms. Beneath its culinary fame is a quieter tradition: beta-glucans, lentinan, a long history of immune support. The Provider is the archetype of daily nourishment: the unshowy thing that keeps you well.

    On the café bar

    The Protector

    Mesima

    Phellinus linteus

    Vigilance. Cellular defence.

Rare, slow, woody, fruiting on mulberry across centuries of East Asian medicine. The Protector is the archetype of quiet resilience: the one who holds steady when others falter. Among the most studied of the medicinal fungi, and among the most patient.
